I had the oppotunity of reading an advance review copy of Domnall and the Borrowed Child by Sylvia Spruck Wrigley, one of the new novellas that are going to be published by Tor.com.
I find the story almost canonical about the relationships between faeries and humans, with a little twist that makes it slightly more interesting.
The main character is an explorer of the faerie court. Even though he is “inmortal” he feels all his years and talks with deep longing about the past, when he was all powerrful. He is given a difficult mission: Domnall will have to change a faerie for a human child. The little faerie is so ill that only human milk can save her. Domnall will give everything to accomplish this mission, even though he is really tired. He will have to solve many problems with very little help.
If it sounds typical to you, you’re right. Faerie tales with changelings are usual and I normally search for something different in my readings. It is well written and it has tense moments, but in the end it is only another changeling story.
